HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT THE MILLIS CENTER

HAPPY, HEALTHY ME (PRE-K)
This program introduces our youngest visitors to healthy habits through a puppet show entitled “Jungle Jamboree.”  Delightful animal friends demonstrate how eating healthy, playing hard, practicing good hygiene, and sleeping well keep us happy and healthy for a lifetime!

TUFFY TOOTH STORY (K-2ND GRADES)
Sheriff Tuffy Tooth stresses the importance of brushing and flossing to keep teeth clean, healthy and cavity free.  Students practice proper brushing and flossing skills with Mr. Big Mouth and watch a brief video starring Dudley and DeeDee that teaches students how to maintain a glowing smile.  Students learn about healthy food choices by playing a game called “Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down Foods.”

JOIN THE  CLEAN CLUB (K-2ND GRADES)
This program teaches students that germs are everywhere and that some of them are good and some bad.  A brief video helps reinforce how, when and why we need to wash our hands.  Students can see how germs spread with the help of our “magic solution” and “magic light”!  Students leave prepared to practice good hygiene for life.

SENSE-ABILITIES (K-2ND GRADES)
Students are introduced to the wonders of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch through a variety of hands-on activities.  They learn how our sense organs work, not only to make our lives beautiful, but to keep us safe and help us learn about our immediate environment.

DYNAMIC DUO (3RD GRADE)
This program is designed to explore the relationship between the skeletal and muscular systems.  Kids utilize their own bones and muscles during a “Boney Hokey Pokey” competition.  The program concludes with a round of computerized “Dynamic Duo Game Show Jeopardy” using our Wireless Student Response System.

FOOD, FITNESS AND FUN (K-5TH GRADES)
Students learn valuable information on nutrition, the heart and fitness as we take a look at the food guide pyramid with life-like food models.  Lighted exhibits, muscle and fat replicas, fat and sugar tubes, a heart pump race and the computerized exercycle are featured in this program.

 ALL ABOUT ME (K-5TH  GRADE)
This program explores the wonders of the amazing human body.  Special concentration is placed on the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems.  Three-dimensional models, actual preserved organs, and a variety of hands-on activities are used to present the complexity of these body systems.  Preventative  aspects of healthy eating, exercise, safety and not smoking are also a part of this engaging program.

BE IN THE NO (K-5TH  GRADE)
This program focuses on many substances that can be harmful to growing bodies.  The effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are discussed.  Peer pressure and refusal skills are an integral part of this program.  Students learn how advertising can affect the decisions they make regarding the use of drugs.  The message is clear that a lifetime of good health and happiness depends on making the right choices.

SMART-N-SAFE (K-5TH  GRADE)
Students learn all aspects of injury prevention and how important it is to use safety precautions in their daily lives.  The vital importance of the brain and spinal cord are discussed as they relate to bike, water, vehicle, weapon, and sports safety.  This dramatic presentation encourages students to “think first” before engaging in potentially dangerous situations.  First aid topics are introduced according to appropriate age levels.

GROSS ENCOUNTERS (K-5TH  GRADE)
This educational, yet comical program takes a close look at gross human body functions.  It involves an out-of-this-world encounter with an alien who is extremely confused about the variety of sounds, smells and secretions produced by the human body.  A thrilling, competitive game of Gross Human Body Trivia is the grand finale!

JANE PROGRAM (5TH GRADE, girls only)
The primary goal of this program is to prepare pre-adolescent girls for the onset of puberty and the unique experience of growing up.  A large portion of the class deals with feminine hygiene issues, with emphasis on menstruation.  Discussion topics include healthy eating, exercising, and sleeping habits as well as emotions.  This program can be modified to meet your groups’ instructional needs per request.
